A Farmers Wife's Life.
As the days get longer I become aware that my least favourite time of year is just around the corner. That time of year when farmers give up sitting at their dinner tables with their family. When my Husband goes out the field all day and some of the night. Leaving me alone with 3 kids, and no help. I become the only one to feed the men who work so hard to put all that food on your table. I keep seeing all these Facebook posts that say the men are the hard workers. Don't misunderstand me they do work very hard. But also Think about the wife behind that man in the field. What does she do everyday when he is away in that field?
Every day that they are in the field a women is holding down the fort so to speak. Getting kids to their after school activities, getting groceries, picking up parts (and running it out), cleaning house, cutting the grass, laundry, feeding not only the kids but the men in the field as well. When its not a week day we like to go to the beach and hangout, because if i don't take them who will?
I am jealous of those ladies with husbands that have the 9 to 5 jobs. They come home about the same time every day. Those jobs that have paid vacation days, and all those civic holidays when you get that day off. As farmers none of this means anything to us. Holidays are rainy days that give you that much needed family time, along with all those awesome puddles. Civic holidays mean nothing if the sun is shining and the wind is warm. Days like that the Air Drill is running or the combine is buzzing. They never stop so long as they can be working.
When the kids are finally in bed and the kitchen is clean ready for the next day, and i finally sit down and wait for my husband to come home. Because going to bed without him beside me seems wrong. We talk about our day, before our eyes become so heavy that we can't help but go to sleep. I frequently miss having him around to talk to during the day. I miss hanging out with my best friend. Then i remember that in winter we caught up on this missed family time. He is often home early and we can go on Dates, and day trips with the family. I have realised that i always miss him the most when he really can't come home. When he has to stay and work so that we can afford things. Farmers have a lot of discipline to stay out in the field to get the job done.
So as all those pictures on Facebook say. Thank a Farmer!
